The fall dance season started with a bang as the Alonzo King LINES Ballet swept into town last weekend. Look for these other events going on or coming up in contemporary dance in Tulsa.
— October promises some exciting performances, beginning with the Oklahoma debut of the Wylliams/Henry Contemporary Dance Company from Kansas City, appearing at Studio K on October 8.
— The 5th Annual Oklahoma Dance Film Festival runs October 13-16 at the Circle Cinema.
— The last weekend of the month brings Tulsa Ballet’s eagerly anticipated contemporary triple bill, featuring works by William Forsythe, Jiri Kylian, and Twyla Tharp.
— Looking to learn? Local companies Portico Dans Theatre and Tulsa Modern Movement are both hosting contemporary dance classes this season. Portico offers contemporary ballet on Sundays (1-2 pm) at the Legacy Dance Project, and a brand new aerial dance class on Thursdays (6:30-7:30) at Liggett Studio. (As far as I know, it’s the only aerial class in Tulsa.) TuMM offers an introduction to Graham technique on Wednesdays (6:30-7:45) at Liggett, with live music by Josh Massad.
I’ll be posting more about these and other people, places, and events as they happen. (I might even post about my trip to the hardware store with choreographer Rachel Bruce Johnson. Dancers, construction, oy … you’ll just have to wait and see.)
Looking forward to seeing you all around!
